How to Unclog Your Kitchen Sink

Use these tips the next time your kitchen sink becomes clogged.

As a homeowner, home maintenance issues will occur. While these problems won't require large home improvement solutions, many will require a little time and effort to resolve. A clogged kitchen sink is one of these hassles that can disrupt your dinner plans. Thankfully, unclogging most blockages won't require the assistance of a plumber. Most homeowners can resolve these issues with a few handy resources and time.

Common Causes of Kitchen Sink Clogs

A variety of factors cause clogs in your kitchen sink. Each type may require different approaches to resolve them, especially if you have a garbage disposal.

What can cause clogs in your kitchen drain?

  • Thick liquids like grease, fat, or oils
  • Small cooking utensils, pieces of food packaging, or other non-organic kitchen items
  • Large chunks of fatty meat or skins
  • Small yet strong food substances like pasta noodles, coffee grounds, peels, rice, potato skins, fruit rinds, and seeds

Although various other objects can find their way into your drain, most clogs fall into two categories: organic substances and non-organic materials. When it comes time to fix this problem, homeowners will need to know the safest and most effective ways to solve these problems. Keep in mind that not all clogs are sink-fillers. Odors and slow draining can also be signs of blockage.

How to Remove Kitchen Sink Clogs

  1. Check the Disposal
First, never stick your hand into the garbage disposal, even if it is turned off. In some cases, a clog in the garbage disposal may be the culprit. Run the disposal first, and if it's working, but a clog persists, you'll know the machine is operating correctly.
  2. Pour Boiling Water
This tip is easy, cheap, and almost instantaneous. Boil a pot of hot water and pour the entire amount down the drain. You can also pour a half of a cup of table salt down the drain before the boiling water to see if it clears the obstruction.
  3. Plunge the Sink
A simple plunger can work wonders on all drains in your home, including your kitchen sink. Plunge the drain like you would your toilet and see if the water level starts to decrease. If you have dual sinks, you'll need to plug the opposite side first to prevent water from splashing out.
  4. Baking Soda & Vinegar
If boiling water doesn't loosen up the clog, let this solution work its magic. After you see it bubble, plug the drain with a stopper, and wait a few minutes. Run hot water down the drain to see if the clog has cleared.
  5. Snake It Manually
Using a plumber's snake, also called an auger, or a coat hanger, see if you can either loosen up the clog or pull it out. In some cases, you may need to remove the P-trap and drainpipe but only do so if you are confident in your abilities.
  6. Liquid Drain Cleaners
We encourage homeowners to utilize this method during their final attempts because some chemicals are dangerous and shouldn't be used frequently on your pipes. Follow manufacturer instructions and be sure not to use multiple cleaners at once.
  7. Call a Plumber
Not all clogs can be removed with these DIY home improvement tricks. If the solutions above haven't worked, refrain from using the sink and call your local plumber.

A kitchen sink clog is inconvenient, but it can be easily solved. Follow these easy home improvement tips to keep the heart of your home running smoothly!
